February
Nature is quiet and still.
The garden sleeps.
The animals wait for warmth before leaving their homes.
The bees buzz but just for a few moments in the warmth of the sunny afternoon.
As January comes to a close and February begins to awaken, now is the time to slowly begin anew after the rush of the holidays and the long cold nights of January.
With February 1st we will see a noticeable return of light, even if it's just a tiny bit. Now is the time to plan and wonder at the world as all awakens and life begins the next cycle. Starting seeds in February is the perfect time in the Arizona high desert. Plenty of chili nights before the harsh heat of summer arrives.
As the night retreats and the light returns it’s time to plan for that spring garden, just kidding we’ve been doing that all of January. But now is the time to start deciding what you need to buy or trade, and get those seeds in pots.
Are you going to expand your garden space, transition to raised beds and containers, or try something completely new like huglekulture or lasagna (aka layer) gardening. No idea is silly, no dream too big, it’s time to root and rise together.
By planting seeds in February you let the early spring sun tease those roots and leaves out of that tiny - or not so tiny - seed. Bask in the simple joy as those roots stretch, the leaves unfold, and the beauty rises from something that once fit in the palm of your hand.
